FIELD GUIDE · THE AEO REPORT
How to choose an AEO tool
Buy around the questions you need answered and the work your team can actually do next.
Before a demo, write down the decision you want the tool to support. “Show whether we are cited for these customer questions” is a measurement job. “Tell us which pages to improve” is an editorial job. “Report progress to clients” is a workflow job. A platform may be strong at one and weak at another.
Bring your own prompt set
Use a small sample of actual customer questions across discovery, comparison, and purchase intent. Include brand and unbranded prompts, then ask every vendor to run the same sample. Inspect the saved answers and cited URLs, not only a dashboard score. Check how the platform handles an answer with no citations or no AI feature at all.
Test the work after the dashboard
Ask a teammate to answer three questions from the trial: Which competitor page is cited where ours is absent? What evidence supports that observation? What specific page edit would we try first? If the platform offers recommendations, check whether they point to a page and passage, or merely restate that visibility is low.
Export the underlying prompt, answer, timestamp, engine, and URL records. If you cannot reproduce a chart from the data, ask what the score includes. Check how many prompts and engines your actual plan covers, whether historical data survives a plan change, and whether multiple brands or clients require a higher tier.
Price the whole workflow
Compare the cost at your expected prompt volume, not the advertised entry price. Include seats, additional engines, exports, onboarding, and the staff time needed to turn observations into edits. A smaller monitoring tool may be enough if your team already has a strong publishing process; a broader suite may help if one team owns measurement and execution.
Decide with a short pilot
At the end of the trial, ask whether the tool answered your original question accurately and saved time on a real decision. Keep the prompt sample, raw exports, and notes so you can compare platforms on the same basis. For our current table, see The Landscape ; for the weights behind our scores, see the methodology .
