AEO 101 · Chapter one

Answer engines don't rank pages. They pick sources.

When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best CRM for a 10-person agency?", there is no page one. There is one answer, and a handful of citations under it. AEO — answer engine optimization — is the discipline of becoming one of those citations.

How an answer gets assembled

Every engine differs in detail, but the pipeline is broadly the same — and each stage is a place you can win or lose:

01 Retrieval The engine searches the live web (or its index) for candidate sources. If crawlers can't cleanly read your pages, you're out before the game starts.
02 Selection From dozens of candidates it keeps a handful — favoring sources that answer the question directly, with evidence, near the top of the page.
03 Synthesis The model writes one answer from the survivors. Clear claims, numbers, and definitions get quoted; hedged marketing prose gets paraphrased away.
04 Citation A few sources get named and linked. This is the new page one — typically 3 to 8 slots per answer.

AEO is not SEO with a new hat

They overlap — good structure and authority help both. But the scoreboard, the unit of competition, and the winning moves are different:

Classic SEO AEO
Scoreboard Position on a results page Share of citations across many prompts
Unit The keyword The question — hundreds of phrasings per topic
Competition 10 blue links 3–8 citation slots, winner-writes-the-answer
Volatility Algorithm updates, quarterly-ish Answers shift weekly; models retrain constantly
Visibility Rank trackers, Search Console Invisible without dedicated prompt-panel tooling

What actually moves citations

From eight weeks of controlled tests on our own panel site, in rough order of impact:

+++ Answer-first page structure Lead with the direct answer, then support it. Engines lift the first clean, complete statement they find.
+++ Citable evidence Original numbers, benchmarks, and named methodology. Models strongly prefer sources that give them something concrete to quote.
++ Third-party presence Reviews, comparisons, and mentions on sites engines already trust. Many answers cite about you, not by you.
++ Machine readability Clean HTML, schema markup, fast responses, no crawler blocks on AI user agents.
+ Freshness signals Visible update dates and current-year framing. Engines discount stale sources for buying questions.

Why you need tooling at all

You can't optimize what you can't see, and AI answers are invisible by default: they're personalized, they change week to week, and no engine publishes a "rankings" report. AEO platforms solve this by asking each engine hundreds of buyer-like prompts on a schedule and recording who gets cited.

The tools differ on two axes: how well they see (engines covered, prompt volume, citation detail) and whether they help you act (recommendations, content briefs, technical fixes). Most only do the first. That distinction drives our scoring — and most of the spread in our rankings .
