FIELD GUIDE · THE AEO REPORT

How to measure AI citations

A repeatable prompt panel tells you more than a screenshot of one answer. Here is a lightweight way to build one.

Start with the questions your audience really asks. A useful panel mixes discovery questions ("what is…"), comparisons ("X versus Y"), and purchase questions ("which tool fits…"). Write the exact prompts down before you run them, and keep them stable between rounds. Otherwise a changed question can masquerade as a changed result.

Record the answer, not just a rank

For every run, save the engine, prompt, date, region or account context where relevant, the answer text, and every visible cited URL. Mark whether your brand was named, whether your own page was cited, and whether a third-party page about you was cited. These are different outcomes. A citation to a comparison article is useful evidence of visibility, but it is not a visit to your site.

Separate the denominator. “Cited in 12 of 40 answers” is different from “12 citations across 40 answers”: one answer may link to multiple pages. Report both answer-level presence and the number of cited URLs, and keep brand prompts separate from unbranded prompts.

Repeat the same panel

Run the panel on a schedule and compare like with like. AI Overviews do not appear for every Google query, and the responses and supporting links can vary between AI Overviews and AI Mode. Treat a missing AI answer as its own observation rather than as a failed citation. Google explains how its AI features work .

When you change a page, record what changed and when. Keep a set of untouched pages or topics for comparison if you want to judge whether the movement is specific to your edit. A before-and-after chart alone cannot separate the edit from an engine change, a competitor update, or ordinary answer variation.

Pair citations with traffic

Citation tracking describes what the answer showed. Analytics describes what people did next. Google includes traffic from AI features in Search Console's Web performance reporting; it does not provide a separate citation ledger there. See Google's measurement guidance .

OpenAI says ChatGPT referral URLs include the parameter “utm_source=chatgpt.com”, which can help identify visits in analytics. Referral counts still miss people who read the answer without clicking. See OpenAI's publisher FAQ .

The useful weekly report

Show the prompt set, the share of answers that named you, the share that cited your pages, the cited URLs, the biggest changes, and a few representative answers. Keep the raw captures so another person can check the conclusion. If the sample is small, say so.
